Humidifiers Facilitate and Nurture Home and Building Mold Growth

       Q. I have a home that was built 2 years ago. It has 2 furnaces and each with a fan driven flow through humidifiers by Lennox (WP-16). From the start I noticed the water would overflow out of the humidifiers and make a water mess on the ground. When I opened the humidifier the mesh filter that the water goes through was slimed over with green slime. So I replaced the filter, but the slime comes back sooner each time now. I would like to send a used mesh off to a lab for testing and to treat the problem and get rid of it. Please advise. (April 10, 2007)

Remove the humidifiers from your system. Running a humidfier is one of the best ways to increase indoor humidity to drive big-time mold growth in the heating/cooling system, inside walls and ceilings, and elsewhere. Keep your indoor humidity to no more than 30 to 40 percent, with, if necessary, the help of  DEhumidifiers. Buy a $30 digital hygrometer from a large hardware or home improvement store to continually monitor the humidity level in your basement, crawl space, attic, garage, all rooms, and outward air flow from your heating/cooling ducts.
