We had a flood in our basement 1 week ago,
the water was about a foot deep. the water has almost receded, but not
enough to start renovating. The smell is pretty bad, what are our health
risks at this point? [June 27, 2005]

The flood in the basement will have thoroughly wet building materials
directly touched, as well as additional water penetration by the wicking up
of the food water into higher levels of building materials. Any building
materials that have been wet for more than 24 hours are likely to have mold
growth under way on the outside surface, inside the building materials, and
behind the materials. In addition, the basement flood, especially for a
week's time, will have caused high basement humidity [above 50 to 60%] to
initiate possible mold growth any where on the basement walls and ceiling.
If mold gets a strong hold on your basement area, it can potentially grow
into the floors and walls above. In addition, airborne mold spores from the
basement mold can travel in air currents to mold cross contaminate the
