Mold Growth in Carpeting and Padding

      Q. After several months of undiagnosed health problems, we had our son's bedroom inspected for mold.  Mold was indeed found behind a wall near his bed.  We had mold remediation done, and they used the proper containment procedures, but I am wondering about the carpeting.  Could there be harmful spores trapped there?  Should it be shampooed?  Must it be replaced?
      A.  Airborne mold spores from the wall mold infestation have probably settled into the carpeting in that bedroom and perhaps elsewhere. You would be wise to carefully visually inspect and  mold test the carpeting for carpet mold growth by using the Scotch tape lift sampling method of mold lab sampling explained in my book Do-It-Best-Yourself Mold Inspection, Testing, Remediation, and Prevention available at http://www.moldmart.net. In general, if carpeting and padding has actual mold growth therein, it should be replaced.   To get rid of mold spores that have been simply deposited/landed on the carpeting (as opposed to active mold growth in the carpeting/padding), use a non-water-based carpet cleaning process such as the Chem-Dry carpet cleaning service. In advance of the carpet cleaning, do repeated vacuuming of your entire carpeting with a high quality carpet vacuum that utilizes an effective hepa filter so that the vacuum exhaust does just throw the vacuumed mold spores back into the air of the room being vacuumed.
